From Passion to Profession

Hi, I'm Maggie. I come from a Romanian gypsy background and I believe this has given me an inner sense of rhythm, but more importantly a sense of freedom! I have been dancing all my life and dancing is what keeps me alive. When I dance the music takes me away, but most of all I have fun! Dancing has taken me to places I never imagined I would go. In 1999, my dreams of being a professional dancer became a reality when I entered a professional dance competition as an untrained and unprofessional dancer. To my surprise, I won the competition and proved to myself and those around me that dreams can come true. Winning this competition gave me the title of "Salsa Queen" and with it the confidence to chase my other dream of being a dance instructor. With this in my heart and mind, I founded Latino Fever School of Dance as a way of sharing my passion for salsa and other dance styles. Now I hope that through my classes I can give others the inspiration to follow their dreams.

Today I draw on my experiences in disco, belly dance and salsa to create my own unique style of self-expression through my teaching, dancing, performing and competing. Each day I learn something new, not only new dance moves but something new about myself and others. When I teach, I feel I am sharing part of my life with my students. I encourage all my students to improve their dancing. I am proud of my students and the Latino Fever School of Dance team, many of whom started as students in my classes.

I feel especially fortunate to have been able to share my passion and experiences in dancing with my son Claudio. Initially I had to force him to dance and was overjoyed when I finally saw him dancing socially. After seeing him take his first steps into salsa, I had another dream - of performing with my own son. In 2003 this dream also became a reality when Claudio and I went to compete at Sydney's Latin Fiesta. I felt extremely proud just to be on the stage with my son, and to our surprise we were announced the winners of the "Sabor Latino" award. After searching for a dance partner all my life I realised that what I had been looking for had been by my side the whole time. All I had to do, was wait for him to grow up. Now Claudio and I perform as part of Latino Fever School of Dance all around Sydney, and continue training together for future performances. I am thankful to God for my dreams becoming a reality!!! I would like to give special thanks to all the people who have helped me and who continue to make Latino Fever School of Dance a reality. Some of whom include my sister Elizabeth, my son Claudio, all the performers, teachers, students and team leader Rollo. "Let the music take you away, but most of all have fun!"
